Windows notepad has been around since 1983. It is a very minimal text editor. It has a basic search and replace feature, the ability to change the editor font style and size but that is about it.
Notepad++ on the other hand is a text editor and source code editor that supports around 80 programming languages with syntax highlighting and code folding. It's ability to spell check is a great feature. It does however require configuration to work. The steps are outlined below.
Select Plugins » Plugins Admin
Check DSpellCheck » Click Install
Click Yes! Notepad++ will restart
Now select Plugins » DSpellCheck » Settings
Click Download! The Download Dictionaries Dialog Popsup
Check desired languages and finally Install Selected
